AI, Experience and the Older Worker: What Nobody Is Talking About

A conversation that challenges everything you think you know about age, technology and the future of work. Let's start with a question.

Can you name someone over 60 who doesn't own a mobile phone?

Take your time. Think hard. No? Neither can we.

Yet somehow, the assumption that older people and technology simply do not mix remains stubbornly alive, showing up in hiring decisions, in workplace culture, and increasingly, in conversations about artificial intelligence.

In our latest interview, we sat down with a researcher who has spent nearly 40 years studying the ageing population. What followed was one of the most honest, funny and genuinely useful conversations we have had about AI, experience and what it really means to stay relevant in a rapidly changing world of work.

Here is what we learned:

Could AI make ageism better or worse?

The assumption is that AI will make ageism worse. But the reality is far more nuanced, and far more hopeful. In this clip, we challenge one of the most persistent myths about older workers and technology.

How can employers tell who really has the experience?

When AI can generate a polished CV in seconds, the traditional resume has lost much of its power. So how do you stand out? This clip introduces a simple but revealing exercise that every professional, especially those over 50, should try today.

What do experienced workers bring that AI simply cannot replace?

Two people. Same prompt. Same AI platform. Broadly similar output. So what makes one professional irreplaceable and the other disposable? The answer comes down to something called original voice, and it might be your most valuable professional asset.

Feeling overwhelmed by AI? Here is the only advice you need.

No course. No certification. No manual. Just one simple mindset shift that makes all the difference, at any age.

Where to Start - Right Now

Here is a little exercise for you from Dave, our researcher:

  • Pick up your phone. Open your favourite AI platform. And type this:

    • "Tell me about [your name] and what makes them different."

  • What came back? Was it impressive? Was it accurate? Was it anything at all?

  • Notice what it says. Notice what it misses. Notice how your own experience and knowledge fills in the gaps that the AI cannot.

  • That gap between what the AI generates and what you know from experience, and having actually lived and worked in your field, is your value. It always has been. AI has just made it easier to see.
